Sona Solar Zimbabwe is proud to illuminate a story of hope and transformation unfolding in the sun-drenched landscapes of Hurungwe, Zimbabwe.

Through a beacon of innovation – solar-powered piped water schemes – local communities are not only achieving water security but also cultivating thriving gardens, fostering a more balanced relationship with wildlife, and building a resilient future.

A Legacy of Struggle: The Seeds of Change

For generations, the residents of Hurungwe have grappled with the constant threat of wildlife raiding their crops. Elephants, baboons, and other animals posed a significant challenge, causing substantial losses and fueling tensions. Traditional methods of protection, like building fences and guarding crops through the night, proved to be labor-intensive and often ineffective. This constant struggle left families feeling discouraged and their livelihoods threatened.

However, a new dawn has arrived, bringing with it the promise of a brighter future.

The Zambezi Valley Biodiversity Project, a collaborative effort between the UNDP, GEF, and local communities, introduced a groundbreaking solution: solar-powered piped water schemes and fenced community gardens across Wards 7, 8, and 9.

This transformative initiative has planted the seeds of change, fostering a multitude of benefits:

  1. Reliable Water, Flourishing Crops: Solar-powered pumps provide a constant source of water, revitalizing agricultural practices. This not only ensures reliable crop irrigation but also reduces the need for villagers to venture into wildlife areas for water, minimizing encounters with potentially dangerous animals. Constance Masona, a widow and grandmother, exemplifies the project's impact. "With the garden," she shares, "our crops are flourishing, and we have enough water. Now, I can care for my grandchildren through farming, providing for their education, food, and clothing. It's a true blessing."
  2. Strengthening the Community Fabric: The project extends its positive influence beyond individual households, fostering a stronger community spirit. Working side-by-side in the gardens fosters collaboration and strengthens social ties. This newfound sense of unity creates a supportive network that benefits everyone involved.
  3. Environmental Conservation Through Coexistence: The initiative promotes a more balanced relationship between humans and wildlife by reducing human encroachment into wildlife territories. With reliable, solar-powered water sources readily available, wildlife is less likely to venture into human settlements in search of water, significantly lowering the risk of conflict. Tinashe Nyamuzwe, a community member, reflects on the positive shift: "We've seen a decrease in elephant incidents. Our harvests are secure, and we can focus on building a better future for ourselves and the environment."

Empowering the Next Generation: A Sustainable Future

The project's impact goes beyond immediate benefits, empowering not just adults but also the younger generation:
  • Investing in Youth: Chipo Mberi, a young woman involved in the project, embodies the spirit of hope for the future. "I'm learning valuable skills in sustainable farming and renewable energy," she exclaims. "This project gives me confidence that we can solve problems without harming the environment. I want to continue this work and help our community thrive."

A Model for Replication: Sharing the Light of Success

The success of the Hurungwe project has become a beacon of inspiration, illuminating the path forward for other regions facing similar challenges. Environmental organizations and government agencies are actively exploring ways to replicate this model in other areas. This cross-pollination of knowledge and best practices holds immense potential for creating a ripple effect of positive change across Zimbabwe and beyond.

As the sun sets over Hurungwe, casting a warm glow on the solar panels, they symbolize a future where human ingenuity and environmental responsibility combine to create a sustainable path forward. In Hurungwe, the seeds of innovation have been sown, nurtured by the power of the sun and the unwavering spirit of the community.

This project serves as a testament to the transformative power of collaboration and serves as a model for a brighter future for all.
