Powering your home with energy from the sun is great in theory, but there a few things you should consider before installing a Solar System in Zimbabwe.

If you are designing or renovating your own home, living sustainably might be at the forefront of your mind (if so, props to you).

As well as saving on power bills because you are not relying so much on the energy grid, solar power will help you to dramatically reduce your homes' carbon footprint.

If you intend to sell your house in the future, installing solar power can also add value to your home.

Here are 10 things you should know before committing to solar panels.

1. CHECK YOUR ENERGY USAGE

Review your energy bills to find out how much electricity you use and when you use it. A good solar panel supplier will help you with this before they quote you. If you only use a little bit of electricity, you only need a small system.

2. WORK OUT YOUR BUDGET

Your geographical location, size and number of panels, roof access, height, material and type of panels all determine the price of installation. The cost of installing a standard Rooftop Solar System for you Home in Zimbabwe (Solar Photovoltaic) system can vary between $2000 and $12,000.

3. FIND YOUR BEST ANGLE

North-facing panels receive the most sun. If your roof is flat or on a steep pitch, you may need tilted frames to get the best angle for the sun. When you use the most electricity throughout the day could also determine placement, as will shading from trees or neighbouring buildings.

Don't forget about the garage roof; this could be a good option for additional solar panels, or if your house doesn't have adequate space for panels.

4. KNOW YOUR SOLAR SYSTEMS

Grid-connected systems use solar power and draw from your electricity supplier at night or on cloudy days. Battery back-up systems store electricity generated during the day to use at night. Stand-alone systems need a generator to supplement the supply.

5. THINK SOLAR FIRST, DESIGN SECOND

If you are designing a new home or undertaking a major reno, think about installing solar before anyone even thinks about drafting. Why? If you 'rough-in' cables during the construction phase of building your home, i.e. before the plasterboard is up, you could avoid having a visible conduit on the wall.

6. GET LOTS OF SOLAR QUOTATONS

More powerful panels might be more expensive per panel, but they may be cheaper overall when you factor in installation and the output they'll produce. Ask your supplier to outline all the possibilities. And get several quotes from different companies.

7. ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS

Ensure your energy supplier is solar-friendly. Ask what they'll pay you for any excess electricity you generate (called a feed-in tariff, or 'FiT') and if this will affect your daily connection charges. Also ask the solar panel company to outline all costs upfront.

8. YOU WILL NEED TO MAINTAIN SOLAR PANELS

A solar system isn't exactly 'set and forget'. Like most parts of a house, solar panels may wear over time and need maintaining or even replacing, so ask your solar-panel supplier about the warranty and any potential maintenance costs.

9. DON’T GO OVER THE TOP

As solar panel costs have fallen so have government rebates and the amount you can earn by selling excess back to the grid. Installing more panels than you need will cost a lot that you may not see returned.

These days, it's about making the most of what you can generate and use yourself - and helping the planet, of course, by harnessing renewable energy.
