The Bikita Minerals Lithium Mine in Zimbabwe has taken a significant leap towards a sustainable and efficient future with the recent inauguration of a 12MW solar PV plant and a 6MWh lithium battery storage system. 

This innovative project, spearheaded by Sinomine Resources Group Co., Ltd., marks a major milestone in the mine's operations and sets a positive precedent for the Zimbabwean mining sector.

Boosting Production Capacity and Embracing Renewables

Sinomine Resources has made a substantial investment in the Bikita mine, exceeding $200 million. This includes the construction of a gravity separation plant and a flotation plant, significantly increasing production capacity for petalite and spodumene concentrate, both crucial elements in lithium-ion batteries.

Ensuring Power Stability and Reducing Environmental Footprint

Recognizing the chronic power shortages in Zimbabwe, Sinomine Resources prioritized a reliable and sustainable power solution for the mine. The integration of the 12MW solar PV plant and the 6MWh lithium battery storage system addresses this challenge head-on.

Record-Breaking Construction and Increased Grid Resilience

The project is a testament to efficient project management. Completed in just ten months, it stands as the fastest-built and highest-quality project of its kind for the Zimbabwe Power Transmission and Transformation Company in the past two decades. This achievement highlights Sinomine Resources' commitment to excellence and sets a new benchmark for future projects.

Furthermore, the project extends beyond the mine itself. The construction of a 132KV power transmission line and a substation not only enhances power security for the Bikita mine but also strengthens the national grid. This improved infrastructure will provide a more reliable power supply for towns along the transmission line, alleviating power shortages for local residents.
