One of the country’s largest solar power projects in the tobacco industry aims to reduce operational costs and carbon footprint.
HARARE – Tobacco Processors Zimbabwe (TPZ), one of the country’s largest tobacco processing companies, has taken a bold leap into the future of energy by commissioning a state-of-the-art 3.1 megawatt (MW) solar power plant at its main processing facility in Southerton, Harare.
Located at the strategic junction of Auckland and Simon Mazorodze roads, the solar installation is designed to power a significant portion of the company’s operations, marking a turning point in its commitment to energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.
A Vision for Cleaner Industry
The commissioning of the solar plant is not just a response to Zimbabwe’s ongoing electricity shortages, but a deliberate and forward-looking decision by TPZ to position itself as a cleaner, greener business in an industry traditionally reliant on fossil fuels.Company officials say the solar project will drastically reduce reliance on the national grid and diesel-powered generators, ensuring a consistent and cost-effective energy supply.
“This is not just about electricity—it’s about creating long-term value for our company, our customers, and the environment,” said a TPZ representative. “By investing in renewable energy, we are reinforcing our commitment to sustainability, while also gaining greater control over one of our most critical operational resources.”
Addressing National Power Challenges
Like many companies operating in Zimbabwe, TPZ has faced the brunt of intermittent power supplies from the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA). These power disruptions have often forced companies to fall back on costly and environmentally damaging diesel generators, affecting both profitability and production timelines.![]() |

Industry Leadership and National Impact
TPZ’s solar plant stands out as one of the largest privately funded renewable energy projects in Zimbabwe’s tobacco industry to date. It aligns well with the government’s drive to increase the country’s renewable energy capacity, with a national goal of generating at least 16.5% of electricity from renewables by 2025.“This kind of investment sends a strong message to the market. It proves that clean energy is not only possible but also commercially viable,” said an energy analyst in Harare. “TPZ is showing leadership where it counts—by investing in real solutions that benefit both the business and the nation.”
A Model for Others
The move by TPZ could set a precedent for other players in Zimbabwe’s manufacturing and agricultural sectors, many of whom are grappling with the same energy challenges. As the price of solar components continues to fall globally, and with net metering policies increasingly supported by the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), more companies are expected to follow TPZ’s example. In addition to cost savings, companies that adopt solar energy benefit from enhanced energy reliability, greater control over production schedules, and alignment with global ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) standards—key to attracting investors and accessing export markets.
Looking Ahead
While the 3.1MW capacity already marks a significant milestone, TPZ has hinted that this may just be the beginning. There are indications that the company may scale up its renewable energy infrastructure in the coming years, depending on the results of the current system’s performance. For now, TPZ’s solar plant stands as a beacon of progress—a reminder that even in challenging environments, innovation and long-term thinking can power sustainable growth.
