A Life Ordained from Birth
Born on October 25, 1918, at Holy Cross Mission in Chirumanzu, his life began with an extraordinary event. Initially named Mamvura ("child of water") by his mother Saramina, who feared he would not survive the influenza epidemic, the infant was presumed dead shortly after birth. In an act of faith, his mother rushed him to Father Schmidt, a Roman Catholic Priest, for final rites. After being christened Paul, the baby miraculously burst into a cry. Those present, engulfed by the Holy Spirit, proclaimed, "Mwana amutsirwe basa" — "The child has been raised for a mission."
An educated man, he completed his teacher training at Howard Institute in 1940. He began his career at Gweshe School in 1941, where his passion for education saw enrollment grow from 25 to 196 students in a single year. Between 1948 and 1951, he served as a respected headmaster at Chideme School in Chivhu, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to knowledge and upliftment.
A Journey Guided by Vision
In 1940, a vision solidified his life's purpose. He saw the words "RECREATION OF AFRICA" printed in the sky by the hand of God, followed by a voice instructing him: "Write to the university students so that they come and help you in the recreation of Africa!" This mission—to take people out of darkness and into the light of everlasting life—became his guiding principle.
In 1942, an angel appeared to him, asking, "Son, do you want earthly riches?" He replied, "No, I want a church instead." He fulfilled this vow later in life by resigning from his highly paying job as a headmaster and selling his supermarkets and shops to dedicate himself fully to his divine calling.
In 1951, a voice proclaimed in a vision, "Who shall we commission, who will go for us?" Paul Mwazha quickly offered himself. This moment was the foundation of his commission (kutumwa), a divine calling to fetch the downtrodden and bring them to glory.
Building the African Apostolic Church
In 1957, as he crossed the Mwerehari bridge in Murambinda, a voice from God proclaimed, "The African Apostolic Church, VaApostora VeAfrica!" The name was not man-made but divinely given. In the autumn of 1959, after a vision of a notebook with three ticks (√√√) signifying a go-ahead, the church was formally established.
His mission was reinforced by further visions instructing him to "preach the importance of the word of Jesus Christ" and to "go plant the seed of God's kingdom." He embraced this work with zeal, remaining steadfast and never looking back. He emphasized education, appointing learned men to leadership roles and encouraging congregants to pursue knowledge, resulting in a community of intellectuals uncommon in many indigenous churches.
An Enduring Legacy of Light
At 107, Mutumwa Mwazha remains strong. He has shunned earthly things, preferring to do God's work by wiping the tears of those who cry. His ministry is known for countless wonders—the barren having children, the jobless getting jobs, and demons being cast away—all performed in the name of Jesus Christ. Despite leading a church with millions of followers, he has refused to hog the limelight, preferring a low-key life characterized by humility, benevolence, and prayer.
As a company dedicated to bringing light and power to homes across Zimbabwe, we at Sona Solar Zimbabwe are profoundly inspired by individuals like Mutumwa Paul Mwazha. His lifelong mission to lead people from darkness to spiritual light resonates with our own goal of illuminating the nation with clean, sustainable energy.
