Zimplats Launches US$54M Solar Plant, Cementing Push for Energy Independence
In a significant move to secure its energy future, platinum giant Zimplats has commenced construction of its 45MW Phase 2A solar power plant. The US$54 million project marks the next stage in the company's ambitious renewable energy strategy, aimed at de-risking its operations from national grid instability and advancing its sustainability goals.
The New Solar Project
The 45MW Phase 2A plant carries a total project cost of US$54 million. According to Zimplats' quarterly report for the period ending September 30, 2025, an initial US$12 million has already been invested, with a further US$36 million contractually committed. The project is on track for completion in the first half of 2027.
This new construction is the second part of a broader solar strategy. It builds upon the successful commissioning of the 35MW Phase 1A plant in August 2024. Once the new phase is complete, Zimplats will command a total installed solar capacity of 80MW, making it a significant private power producer in the country.
Strategic Importance
The primary driver for this large-scale investment is to ensure operational continuity. By generating its own power, Zimplats can insulate its power-intensive mining and smelting operations from the volatility and supply challenges of the national grid, thereby protecting production targets and revenue streams.
This move is a cornerstone of Zimplats' Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy. By shifting a significant portion of its energy consumption to a renewable source, the company is actively working to reduce its carbon footprint and align its operations with global sustainability benchmarks, a key factor for international investors.
A Sector-Wide Shift to Renewables
Zimplats' investment sets a powerful benchmark and reflects a broader trend across Zimbabwe's capital-intensive mining sector. Many large-scale operators are now pursuing energy self-sufficiency to mitigate risk and control costs.
Other major players making similar moves include:
- Caledonia Mining: Commissioned a 12.2MW solar plant at Blanket Mine.
- Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe (PLZ): Is developing a large-scale 70MW power station.
- PPC Zimbabwe: Has announced plans for two solar plants totaling 30MW.
Frequently Asked Questions
Zimplats is building a 45-megawatt solar power plant, referred to as Phase 2A of its renewable energy project.
The Phase 2A project is valued at US$54 million. When combined with the already completed Phase 1A, it represents a total solar investment of over US$91 million.
The primary reasons are to secure a reliable power supply for its mining operations independent of the national grid, to reduce long-term energy costs, and to meet its corporate goals for sustainability and reducing carbon emissions.
