The Lights Will Never Go Out: Africa University's $400k Solar Switch
Location: Mutare, Manicaland | Capacity: 250kW | Savings: $240k/Year
In a massive leap for sustainable education, Africa University (AU) has successfully commissioned a 250-kilowatt solar power plant. Amidst the power-shedding challenges bedeviling the nation, the United Methodist institution has taken control of its energy future, ensuring uninterrupted learning for its students and significant operational savings.
An Engineering Feat
Completed in a record 26 days, this is the largest solar project in Manicaland province.
CAPACITY
250 Kilowatts
576 Solar Panels built below the AU Cross and Flame.
POWER OUTPUT
600 Households
Equivalent energy generated to power a small suburb.
SECURITY
High-Tech Protection
480m clear view fence, CCTV surveillance, and restricted access.
The Financial Case for Solar
Before the switch, the university faced bills averaging $20,000 per month.
- Annual Energy Bill (Old): ~$240,000
- Diesel Generator Cost (Old): ~$600 per day
- Project Cost: $400,000 (Funded by AU Tennessee Inc.)
- Projected Savings: ~$240,000 per year
"We have switched off fuel-powered generators... resulting in operational sustainability." — Prof. Talon Garikayi
Powering Education
The plant provides a consistent power supply to all dormitories, the library, engineering colleges, the clinic, and administrative blocks. This means labs can run longer, and data centers operate efficiently without the risk of blackouts.
Vice Chancellor Peter M. Mageto noted that by generating their own power, AU frees up space on the national grid, allowing more underserved and off-grid communities to access electricity.
Former SRC President Pierre Kahambwe Lubangi highlighted that stable electricity removes a major barrier for students. "This solar project is not just a technical advancement, it is a promise... that illuminates our path towards a better future."
Visionary Leadership
"It’s no accident that Africa University built this plant under the Cross and Flame. The lights will never go out at Africa University. This serves as a model for sustainable innovation across the continent."
"We want to thank all those who dreamed... May this project be just the beginning of what is to come as Africa University continues to show the continent that it is possible to self-fund projects of this magnitude."
Sona Solar Zimbabwe celebrates this monumental achievement. Africa University has set the benchmark for institutions across Zimbabwe, proving that going green is not just an environmental choice, but a financial necessity.
