The landmark project will involve a US$160 million investment to construct what is set to become one of Zimbabwe’s largest solar power plants, located at Rufaro Farm in Marondera. Once completed, the project is expected to significantly boost national electricity supply, reduce power shortages, and accelerate Zimbabwe’s transition to clean, renewable energy.
Strategic Partnership
Addressing the media in Marondera, Green Power’s chief executive, Mr. Jordan Assassa, highlighted the significance of the collaboration with local partner Mr. Francis Gogwe, General Manager of De Green Rhino Energy.
“We are here to celebrate the 150-megawatt solar project in Zimbabwe... We are bringing US$160 million investment into Zimbabwe. This project is critical in that it will show all foreign investors that Zimbabwe is now in a new era and is friendly to investors,” said Mr. Assassa.
Impact & Jobs
The project is expected to benefit more than 250,000 households, bringing green energy to homes, local schools, and hospitals.
De Green Rhino Energy General Manager, Mr. Francis Gogwe, expressed excitement about the employment opportunities the project will generate.
“We will create jobs for the people. About 500 jobs will be created, especially during the construction phase. There will be fantastic job opportunities,” he stated.
Timeline

- Start Date: Actual construction works will start in the first quarter of next year.
- Completion Date: The whole project is expected to be completed in 2027.
National Agenda
The investment is a direct response to President Mnangagwa’s friendly investor policies, which have resulted in massive investments in all sectors of the economy. Zimbabwe is experiencing a significant surge in solar energy investments, which are expected to bring relief to the national energy deficit.
