Sona Solar Zimbabwe is the nation’s leading and most trusted provider of reliable, affordable, and high-efficiency solar energy solutions. As a proven market leader in both residential and commercial solar installations, we design and install premium PV systems that help Zimbabweans cut electricity costs, overcome ZESA load shedding, and achieve long-term energy independence. Our expert team has powered thousands of homes, shops, farms, and businesses across Zimbabwe with durable and scalable solar systems. At Sona Solar Zimbabwe, we do more than supply solar equipment— we deliver real, dependable power independence you can trust.
With ZESA load shedding increasing and electricity tariffs rising, switching to solar has become the smartest investment for Zimbabwean households and businesses. Solar power reduces energy costs, boosts property value, and keeps you powered even when the grid fails. Below, we break down everything you need to know to make the switch to clean, reliable solar energy.
Factors To Consider Before Installing
Before availing of solar installation services, consider these crucial factors for the Zimbabwean climate.
It is a common misconception that the hotter it is, the better for solar. In reality, solar panels rely on sunlight (photons), not heat. Excessive heat, like our "October heat," can actually cause voltage drops.
The Sona Solution: We mount panels with breathable space and adequate airflow between the roof and the panel. This allows for convection cooling, increasing efficiency. We also use sturdy mounting kits designed to withstand Zimbabwean storms and winds.
Every home is different. Do you run boreholes, multiple fridges, or just lights? Understanding your consumption is vital. We generally recommend at least 1kW of solar panels for every basic household setup, but scaling up to 5kVA or 10kVA is necessary for modern homes running heavy appliances.
Since Sona Solar panels are designed to last 25 years or more, your roof must be in good condition. Roughly, every 4 square meters of viable roof space can host 1kWp of solar panels. North-facing roofs yield the highest harvest in the Southern Hemisphere.
Sona Solar is brand agnostic but adheres to strict standards. We only stock brands used by international bank-financed solar farms, such as Jinko, Longi, JA Solar, and Canadian Solar.
We rigorously cross-test panels and register serial numbers. If a panel goes bad (a rare event), Sona Solar handles the warranty replacement process so your energy harvest isn't hampered.
Technology Explained
Grid-Tie Inverters: These connect solar directly to the grid. However, by law, they must shut down during a blackout (brownout) to prevent electrocuting linemen. In Zimbabwe, where blackouts are frequent, pure grid-tie is often insufficient.
Hybrid Inverters (Sona Specialty): We specialize in Hybrid Inverters (Must, Deye, Codi, Phocos). These blend Solar, ZESA, and Batteries. When ZESA goes off, the hybrid inverter isolates your home from the grid and continues to power your house via battery and solar, ensuring you are never in the dark.
Why put more panels than the inverter rating? Because panels lose efficiency in high heat (voltage drop). In our hot climate, panels can lose up to 20% of peak production at noon.
Sona Solar often pairs, for example, 6kWp of solar panels with a 5kW rated inverter. This compensates for heat losses and ensures you get maximum power earlier in the morning and later in the afternoon.
Polycrystalline (Blue): Made from multiple silicon crystals. Lower cost, but slightly less efficient.
Monocrystalline (Black): Made from high-purity silicon. These panels absorb more light and perform better in cloudy weather. Sona Solar predominantly stocks Monocrystalline and Bifacial panels (e.g., 585W Jinko) for maximum efficiency in limited spaces.
