| Nicholas Zakaria (1956 - 2025): A guiding light in Zimbabwean Music |
Just as solar energy powers homes across Zimbabwe, his music continues to illuminate hearts and leave a lasting cultural legacy for the nation.
A Nation Mourns
The sombre news was delivered via an official family statement, which painted a picture of a man deeply revered both for his artistry and his character. The statement honored the towering figure, noting his immense contribution to the musical landscape:
“Nicholas left an indelible mark on the music world with his inspiring voice and dedication to his craft. His legacy will live on through his music, and he will be deeply missed by fans and loved ones.”
At Sona Solar Zimbabwe, we extend our deepest condolences to the Zakaria family during this difficult time.
Origins of a Star
Born in 1956 at Belgownie Estate in Mazowe, Nicholas Zakaria’s journey began in rural simplicity. His father, Maluva Chekani, migrated from Malawi to Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia) in 1947 in search of work and opportunity.
At just eight years old, Nicholas began experimenting with his father’s guitar, unknowingly laying the foundation for a monumental career. By age 14, he had formed his first band — The Green Mangoes — choosing music over formal exams, a bold step that ultimately shaped Zimbabwean arts culture.
Zakaria grew up in a deeply spiritual household, which greatly influenced his calm demeanor and leadership style. His adoption of the name Madzibaba symbolized humility, discipline, and a life of service.
Throughout his career, he maintained strong ties to his spiritual beliefs, which many say guided his conflict-free personality and fatherly presence in the music industry.
The name Khiama comes from the Swahili word meaning “tent” or “temporary shelter.” Zakaria chose the name to symbolize unity, humility, and a shared artistic home.
For him, Khiama was not just a band — it was a spiritual and creative refuge where musicians could grow, collaborate, and eventually spread their wings.
The Sungura Powerhouse
In 1984, Zakaria co-founded the legendary Khiama Boys, a group that would shape Sungura for generations. Members included the late Tineyi Chikupo, Alick Macheso, System Tazvida, and Zakaria’s wife, Margaret Gweshe.
Hits such as "Mabhauwa", "Vagoni", and "Mozai" catapulted the group to national fame and set a new standard for rhythm, bassline precision, and lyrical storytelling.
Known for his gentle leadership, Zakaria ran the Khiama Boys like a family. He offered encouragement, guidance, and discipline while allowing each member creative freedom.
He believed in raising others higher, often reminding young musicians: “Talent is a gift; discipline is a choice.”
After a major split in 1997, Zakaria took a break from music and briefly worked as a haulage truck driver to raise funds for new instruments and equipment.
He made a powerful comeback in 2002 with albums like Munongedzo and Mabvi Nemagokora, reestablishing himself as Sungura’s godfather and proving that passion always finds its way home.
Madzibaba received multiple awards throughout his career, including lifetime achievement honors for his decades-long contribution to the arts.
Today, his influence lives on through the sound of modern Sungura, many of whose stars were shaped directly or indirectly by his teachings.
Why "Senior Lecturer"?
Zakaria earned the nickname "Senior Lecturer" because he trained some of the greatest musicians in Zimbabwean history. His protégés include Alick Macheso, System Tazvida, Silas Chimbetu, and countless rising artists.
His mentorship philosophy was grounded in humility and collective success. He famously said, "Mbiri yavo imbiri yanguwo" — their success is my success.
Zakaria believed Sungura was not just a genre — it was a cultural identity. He emphasized precision in rhythm guitar, emotional honesty in lyrics, and discipline in live performances.
Many artists credit him with transforming Sungura from rural entertainment into a national treasure.
Despite his fame, Zakaria remained soft-spoken, humble, and approachable. He lived a life that inspired not only musicians but entire communities.
To many, he was not just an artist — he was a father, a counselor, and a symbol of discipline and peace.
Rest in Peace, Madzibaba
As we at Sona Solar Zimbabwe reflect on his life, we are reminded that true energy comes from passion and dedication. Nicholas Zakaria’s music was distinctively calm, meditative, and soulful—a source of comfort for millions.
The "Senior Lecturer" may have put down his guitar, but the melody lingers on.
Rest in Power, Nicholas Zakaria.
