Unity Day, celebrated annually on December 22 since 1987, marks a significant convergence point in Zimbabwe’s political history. It commemorates the signing of the Unity Accord between ZANU-PF and PF-ZAPU, an act that sought to unify the nation by ending the post-independence conflict known as Gukurahundi.

| A Foundation for Peace: The Unity Accord remains an essential reminder that national stability is linked to reconciliation. |
Far from being a mere symbolic gesture, the Unity Accord laid the groundwork for a unified, forward-looking Zimbabwe. That vision continues to resonate today through the Second Republic’s guiding philosophy of "leaving no one and no place behind."
The Foundation of Peace
Recognising the critical need for reconciliation during a period of political turbulence, visionary leaders Cde Robert Mugabe and Dr. Joshua Nkomo united their political parties into a single force, ZANU-PF. This act extinguished political conflict and established the framework for stability.
Contemporary Healing
The most significant aspect of Unity Day 2025 is the unprecedented Gukurahundi Community Engagement Outreach Programme.
ENGAGEMENT STATS
As of Dec 5, 2025
22,486 Testimonies Recorded
60.62% Women Participation
Spearheaded by President Mnangagwa and led by traditional leaders, this initiative addresses the dark chapter of the early 1980s. Attorney-General Mrs. Virginia Mabiza noted that the figures reflect "strong community participation and sustained commitment by traditional leaders."
Nyika Inovakwa Nevene Vayo
The Government’s approach is rooted in the philosophy: "Nyika inovakwa, inotongwa, inonamatigwa nevene vayo / Ilizwe lakhiwa, libuswe, futhi lithandazelwe ngabaninilo" (A country is built, governed, and prayed for by its owners).
By empowering traditional leaders to lead the outreach, the process is indigenised and owned by the communities themselves, ensuring solutions are culturally resonant rather than dictated by external actors.
Unity as an Economic Asset
Unity is no longer just a symbolic ideal; it is an essential component of sustainable development and the "Zimbabwe is Open for Business" policy.
By leveraging this foundation of peace, the Second Republic is focusing on long-term goals like industrialisation and economic diversification. Unity Day 2025 serves as a powerful reminder of Zimbabwe’s capacity for self-determination and restorative justice.
