On Monday, December 22, Zimbabweans will commemorate the 38th anniversary of the historic Unity Accord signed between ZANU-PF and PF-ZAPU in 1987. As the nation reflects on nearly four decades of cohesion, national leaders are emphasizing that peace is the engine driving our economic future.

| 38 Years of Unity: Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri Kashiri calls for safeguarding national values. |
ZANU-PF National Chairperson and Defence Minister, Cde Oppah Muchinguri Kashiri, has highlighted that the unity and peace prevailing in the country have been instrumental in advancing the national development agenda, stating that national interests must remain sacrosanct.
Guiding Principles
The instruments put in place by our founding leaders still apply today.
Cde Muchinguri Kashiri emphasized that the mantras established in 1987 are timeless. She noted, "What has kept us united are the instruments that were put in place by our leaders then... that we are Zimbabweans. Zimbabwe is bigger than us as individuals."
The core values of the Unity Accord act as the glue holding the nation together. Leaders continue to emphasize that safeguarding these values is essential for national cohesion and stability.
Peace Enables Progress
Under the National Development Strategy (NDS), Zimbabwe is forging ahead. Cde Muchinguri pointed out that peace is the prerequisite for this growth:
"When we look at the various developments that are happening in the country, be it in infrastructure, agriculture, in various spheres... unity is key to ensure that development continues to take place."
Leaving No One Behind
The Minister referenced President Mnangagwa's vision for the nation:
- Inclusivity: "The President is saying he will not leave any community or individual behind under Vision 2030."
- Diplomacy: "He is saying, he is an enemy to none, and he is a friend to all."
- Opportunity: "Zimbabwe is open for business... not just for people outside, but also for Zimbabweans."
Following the Footsteps
The ruling party’s National Chairperson affirmed that the party will continue to follow in the footsteps of the country’s founding fathers.
Calling for unity and peace as guiding principles for a prosperous nation remains the primary agenda as Zimbabwe reflects on 38 years of the Accord.
