Solar-Powered Farm Supports Energy & Food Security in Midlands
A Triumph for Indigenous Agriculture & Renewable Energy.
A Gweru-based farmer has commissioned a privately funded solar power plant capable of feeding electricity into the national grid. This project highlights the growing role of indigenous agricultural producers in Zimbabwe’s renewable energy transition, simultaneously tackling energy shortages and food security.

Project at a Glance
44kW Generation Capacity
Significantly exceeding the 10kW required for the farm’s operations, ensuring ample surplus for the national grid.
US$60,000 Investment
A privately funded initiative demonstrating the power of private sector participation in renewable energy generation.
Net Metering Enabled
Excess energy is exported to ZETDC, banking power credits for use during cloudy periods or night shifts.
Deep Dive: Energy & Agriculture
Mrs. Matilda Manhambo, the project owner, emphasized that reliable energy is essential for sustained productivity. “As horticulture farmers, we have a responsibility to produce throughout the year, and that requires a constant power supply. Solar energy enables us to achieve this while also answering the government’s call to adopt green energy solutions.”
ZETDC Engineering Manager, Eng. Wonder Mangwanda, explained the broader benefit: “The excess energy will be fed into the national grid, meaning communities as far away as Chipinge can benefit. In effect, the farmer is banking power, which can later be drawn during periods when there is no sunshine.”
Botswana’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Her Excellency Sarah Molosiwa, commended the project: “The region must think outside the box. We need to invest more in infrastructure and fully utilise our land to feed ourselves. We cannot rely on imports for food security, and initiatives like this show what can be achieved.”
The Bigger Picture
Energy experts say private-sector participation in renewable energy generation will be critical in easing Zimbabwe’s electricity shortages, particularly as climate variability continues to affect hydropower output.
Projects such as this are expected to strengthen national resilience while supporting sustainable agricultural production, ensuring Zimbabwe moves towards energy and food self-sufficiency.
