Solar Reaches Price Tipping Point: Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) Audit to Map Zimbabwe's "Shadow Grid"
Source: ZERA / Sunday Mail Business | Date: 26 Jan 2026
Solar energy has reached a historic price tipping point in Zimbabwe. The long-term cost of rooftop power is now officially lower than conventional grid tariffs. A standard 3.2kVA system that once cost US$3,000 can now be installed for as little as US$1,000 at Sona Solar Zimbabwe.

A Massive Shift in Consumer Behavior
The transition to solar is being accelerated by a significant decline in the cost of solar components. High-efficiency panels and lithium-ion batteries are now more accessible than ever. At Sona Solar Zimbabwe, a standard 3.2kVA system that previously cost US$3,000 can now be installed for as little as US$1,000.
Rooftop solar is no longer just an "emergency backup" for load shedding. With the durability of modern lithium-ion batteries, it is viewed as a permanent, sustainable alternative to the conventional grid. Households across urban and rural divides are pivoting towards self-generation.
Why ZERA is Conducting a Nationwide Household Solar Audit
To accurately assess Zimbabwe’s energy landscape, ZERA is auditing households to determine electrification rates, solar adoption levels, and private system integration. This data will guide national energy planning, improve grid management, and support the growth of renewable energy solutions across the country.
1. Electrification Rate
The 2022 census put electrification at 62%, but this is now outdated. The audit will determine the true percentage of homes powered by solar and other off-grid solutions.
2. National Planning
The Government needs accurate energy access data to develop a strategic roadmap for Zimbabwe’s energy future, including solar, hydro, and hybrid systems.
3. Grid Integration
Proper integration of private solar systems with the national grid is essential. ZERA is working with contractors to ensure safe, efficient grid connection nationwide.
4. Renewable Energy Growth
Tracking the adoption of solar and other renewable technologies helps policymakers and investors support sustainable energy expansion across Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe’s “Energy Island” Problem: Challenges with Household Solar Integration
Many homes and businesses in Zimbabwe operate independent solar systems, creating isolated “energy islands” that are not fully connected to the national grid. This situation poses challenges for grid stability, load management, and the integration of renewable energy solutions. Proper planning and professional solar installation can help bridge these gaps and ensure reliable, safe, and efficient power distribution across the country.
A critical challenge is the mid-day energy surplus. Batteries often reach full charge by noon. Without net metering, solar panels "throttle back" and stop producing, wasting potential energy that could power nearby schools or industries.
Eng Travor Sande highlights a major hurdle: "In many newly developed urban settlements, the national utility has yet to install basic power lines. Without poles, lines, and substations, these homes remain Energy Islands, unable to evacuate surplus power to the national system."
The Rise of the “Prosumer” in Zimbabwe: Solar-Powered Homeowners
As more Zimbabwean households and businesses install solar systems, a new category of energy users has emerged: the “prosumer”—someone who both consumes and produces electricity. With high-quality solar inverters from trusted brands like Must, Deye, Growatt, and Sunsynk, and reliable lithium batteries, prosumers can store excess energy, reduce reliance on ZESA, and even support local grid stability. Professional installation by companies like Sona Solar Zimbabwe ensures safe, efficient, and long-lasting solar systems.
Energy Minister July Moyo notes that 75MW of solar power is already feeding into the grid via net metering. He urges: "If you have solar at your house, and you are not using it... do your net metering."
The Revenue Dilemma
As customers become "prosumers" (producing and consuming), ZESA faces revenue erosion. A former top ZESA executive warns that recovering fixed costs from a smaller volume of sales could force unit price increases.
The Risk: Higher tariffs make self-generation even more attractive, potentially encouraging more customers to defect from the grid, leaving those who cannot afford solar to bear the cost.
