‘Solar-Powered Irrigation Systems are the Way to Go’ for Zimbabwean Farmers
It is fast becoming crucial for farmers to invest in solar-powered systems to generate reliable electricity supplies for irrigation purposes if their intentions to commercialise operations are to succeed.
Reliable energy is the backbone of modern agriculture. With the backing of the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, solar off-grid solutions are now recognized as the key to stable and renewable electricity for farming operations.
Why Farmers Must Switch to Solar Now
The frequency of droughts is increasing, and the effects on agricultural productivity are becoming more severe. As Professor Obert Jiri noted, irrigation systems need to be operated for longer periods, and any interruptions to power can lead to significant losses. Solar-powered irrigation systems offer a reliable and sustainable solution to these challenges.
Unreliable access to the electricity grid continues to be a major issue for farmers. In February 2024, Zimbabwe faced widespread power disruptions that left many irrigators without power despite having post-paid arrangements in place. Solar-powered systems offer an off-grid solution that ensures consistent and uninterrupted access to energy for irrigation, even when the national grid fails.
The National Vision: Solarising Boreholes
The Government is on a massive drive to drill 35,000 boreholes across the country, with the explicit intention to solarise all of them.
Under the Presidential Borehole Drilling Programme, beneficiaries receive solar-powered boreholes to ensure access to clean water and for secondary uses like watering nutritional gardens. This project aligns with the Presidential Rural Development Programme, which plans to set up:
- 35,000 Village Business Units (VBUs)
- 4,800 Youth Business Units
- 9,600 School Business Units
This initiative is set to benefit over 1.8 million households as the Second Republic accelerates efforts to alleviate poverty in line with the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1).
Boosting Production & Saving the Environment
Zimbabwe Farmers Union (ZFU) secretary general Mr. Paul Zakariya emphasized that solar-powered irrigation equipment boosts agricultural activities, ultimately increasing production. This creates employment for many people and earns foreign currency for both the farmer and the country.
Adding to this, ZFU national youth secretary, Mr. Joshua Zinzombe, noted that new energy value chains such as solar irrigation, cold chains, and bio-digesters are clean and renewable. He urged youths in agriculture to adopt renewable energy to spearhead the reduction of carbon emissions.
