Africa GreenCo Secures 'Solar Deal of the Year' for Transformative 100MW Zambia Project
Curated By: Sona Solar Zimbabwe Editorial | Published: March 13, 2026 | Topic: Regional Solar Projects & Green Finance
Regional energy markets are evolving, and the shift toward large-scale renewable infrastructure is gathering unprecedented momentum. Africa GreenCo (GreenCo), a leading renewable energy trader and aggregator operating across Southern Africa, has officially been crowned the winner of the Solar Deal of the Year for Africa at the prestigious IJGlobal Awards 2025 in London.
A Breakthrough in Clean Energy Finance: The award recognizes GreenCo’s instrumental role in the landmark 100MW Chisamba Solar PV Project in Zambia. The accolade celebrates a transaction that successfully demonstrated how commercial capital can independently fund large-scale clean energy generation—without the need for traditional sovereign guarantees.
Breaking Financial Ground in Africa
The IJGlobal Awards, judged by independent industry experts, celebrate excellence in global energy and infrastructure finance. The Solar Deal of the Year category honors transactions that demonstrate immense innovation, complexity, and transformative market impact.
Commercial Financing
The project reached financial close in May 2025, securing US$71.5 million in commercial debt financing from Stanbic Bank Zambia. This was supported by a robust 13-year power purchase agreement with GreenCo.
No Sovereign Guarantees Needed
GreenCo MD for Zambia, Wezi Gondwe, stated: “By unlocking commercial financing at scale without sovereign guarantees, we have demonstrated a replicable and sustainable model for meeting the power demands of the mining sector and the broader regional economy.”
Inside the 100MW Chisamba Solar Mega-Plant
Located in Chisamba, central Zambia, the plant is now fully operational. It is currently the largest grid-connected solar plant in Zambia and the biggest of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa (outside of South Africa).
Developed by ZESCO Subsidiary
The project was developed by Kariba North Bank Extension Power Corporation (KNBEPC), a wholly owned subsidiary of Zambia’s national utility, ZESCO. Engineering and construction were rapidly executed by Power China.
A Milestone for Developers
KNBEPC CEO Boyd Kanchela noted: “This transaction has demonstrated that Zambian public developers can attract fully commercial capital for clean energy infrastructure without relying on the public balance sheet.”
Powering Mines, Freeing Up Grids
The operational framework of this deal goes beyond just generating electricity; it fundamentally optimizes how regional power is distributed through the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP).
Mining Off-Taker
Under GreenCo’s power supply agreement with First Quantum Minerals (FQM), Zambia’s largest mining investor, the plant delivers firm renewable power by blending Chisamba's solar energy with SAPP imports.
Domestic Grid Relief
By supplying the mining giant directly with solar, massive amounts of ZESCO's hydroelectric capacity are freed up. The utility can now redirect that power to ordinary households, small businesses, and domestic users, alleviating crippling shortages.
A Regional Power Player
GreenCo, backed by InfraCo Africa and Impact Fund Denmark, continues to aggregate and trade renewable electricity across Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia, and South Africa, strengthening the entire region's grid resilience.
