Hospitality Goes Green: RTG Expands Solar Investment with Massive 2MW Project at Rainbow Towers
By Oudney Patsika (Sona Solar Zimbabwe)
Industrial Focus: Commercial Solar, Grid-Tied Systems, ESG Strategy
Securing Operational Resilience in Hospitality. The Rainbow Tourism Group (RTG) is setting a powerful precedent for the Zimbabwean hospitality sector. Following proven success at their Kadoma property, RTG has announced plans to roll out a monumental 2-megawatt (2MW) solar energy project at its flagship Rainbow Towers Hotel and Conference Centre in Harare. This Commercial Solar milestone represents a massive shift toward energy independence.

| This massive commercial solar installation will secure the energy needs of one of Zimbabwe's largest hospitality hubs while feeding surplus power back into the national grid via Grid-Tied Systems. |
At Sona Solar Zimbabwe, we continuously advocate for industrial and commercial entities to seize control of their energy economics through a robust ESG Strategy. RTG's strategic investment perfectly illustrates how Renewable Energy is no longer just an environmental buzzword—it is a critical driver of profitability and business continuity in the modern Zimbabwean economy.
Building on Proven Success
RTG’s latest move is not a gamble; it is an expansion based on hard data. The group's initial solar plant at the Kadoma Hotel and Conference Centre served as a highly successful proof of concept for integrating renewable energy into high-consumption commercial properties.
31% Reduction in Energy Costs
According to RTG Board Chairperson Douglas Hoto, the Kadoma plant generated over 270,984 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean energy in the past year alone. This direct generation resulted in a massive 31 percent reduction in energy costs for the property, highlighting the undeniable financial benefits of commercial solar.
The Rainbow Towers 2MW Project
To meet the immense energy demands of the Rainbow Towers Hotel & Conference Centre, RTG is drastically scaling up its renewable infrastructure. The upcoming installation is a monumental 2-megawatt (2MW) solar system.
The system is projected to produce nearly 3 million kilowatt-hours (2,942,838 kWh) annually. Crucially, the architecture of this installation goes beyond self-consumption.
Feeding the National Grid
Hoto confirmed that the massive 2MW system will be grid-tied. This allows any surplus power generated by the hotel to be channelled directly back into the national grid. "This enables surplus energy to be fed into the national grid, contributing to broader national energy resilience," he stated.
Sustainability at the Core
For RTG, this solar expansion is a core pillar of their Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy. "Sustainability remains central to Rainbow Tourism Group’s long-term value creation strategy," noted Hoto.
The "Green Stays" Programme
The group’s broader "Green Stays" initiative has already delivered measurable reductions in water and chemical usage. Current and future refurbishment projects now automatically incorporate smart energy systems and water-saving technologies to maximize overall operational efficiency.
The Financial ROI of Going Green
RTG’s commitment to sustainability aligns perfectly with its financial success. The group reported solid growth in its 2025 financial year, with revenue rising by 13 percent to US$50.3 million.
