NATIONAL MILESTONE

Healing the Nation: Solar Rollout Powers 1,072 Healthcare Facilities Across Zimbabwe

By Oudney Patsika (Sona Solar Zimbabwe)

The Dawn of Green Healthcare Infrastructure. For years, healthcare workers in Zimbabwe's rural clinics and district hospitals operated under the constant threat of ZESA grid failures. Today, a flick of a switch is changing the landscape of national medical services. Reliable solar electricity systems are now enabling doctors to perform emergency surgeries safely at night, maintaining the cold chain for life-saving vaccines, and powering the essential digital infrastructure for modern healthcare delivery.

Decentralised solar energy is eliminating energy poverty and removing critical barriers to life-saving healthcare across Zimbabwe’s ten provinces.

Backed by the Global Fund and executed through a strategic partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC), Zimbabwe has achieved a monumental milestone in sustainable development. At Sona Solar Zimbabwe, we celebrate this transition, recognizing that adopting photovoltaic (PV) power in health facilities does not merely reduce operational costs—it actively saves lives and ensures resilient energy security.

Banishing the "Dark Days"

Globally, nearly a billion people in low- and lower-middle-income countries are served by health facilities with unreliable or no electricity. Clinics facing blackouts previously relied on stretched budgets for diesel generators, which added air pollution and exorbitant fuel costs to already underfunded systems.

In Zimbabwe, the shift to solar is completely rewriting the narrative for maternal health in rural areas.

The End of Candlelight Deliveries

“We used to request mothers to bring candles and torches as part of delivery services. The installation of solar power has tremendously changed our services,” notes Petunia Tshuma, acting nurse-in-charge at Mhandamabwe Clinic, who previously delivered many babies under candlelight.

Beyond lighting, consistent electricity is the backbone of medication preservation. Without it, life-saving vaccines and sensitive medicines lose their potency.

Zero Refrigerator Downtime

“If there is no electricity for two days, our refrigerators are affected, and so is our cold chain,” explains Judith Chamboko, Nurse in Charge at Nemwana Clinic. Solar power ensures that these vital refrigerators remain active 24/7, safeguarding community health.

Zimbabwe's Solar Milestone

The scale of this infrastructure upgrade is unprecedented in the region, turning Zimbabwe into a leading example of green health systems in Africa.

1,072 Facilities Powered

With support from the Global Fund and national partners, over a thousand clinics have been equipped. By the end of 2025, another 188 facilities will be upgraded, pushing the national green energy footprint in health facilities to 70%. “Getting energy from solar helps us reduce emissions and get a more affordable energy source,” confirms Ruramai Makamure, an Electrical Engineer at UNDP Zimbabwe.

The benefits extend far beyond mere illumination. The rollout has generated massive quantifiable success for the environment and diagnostic capabilities.

  • 17,699 Tonnes of CO2 Avoided: The volume of carbon emissions prevented in 2024 alone by shifting away from diesel generators and grid reliance.
  • 300% Capacity Increase: Renovations and solar power have increased laboratory testing volumes by 300% since 2014, radically improving the national response to HIV, TB, Malaria, and outbreaks.

It is not just frontline clinics benefiting. Zimbabwe’s solarized facilities now include massive distribution warehouses. These ensure that medicines are safely stored and swiftly delivered to even the most remote areas, while national laboratories are empowered to test the safety of health products without grid interruptions.

Surviving Drought & El Niño

Smart health systems strengthen national resilience, a fact brutally proven over the last two years. In 2024, both Zambia and Zimbabwe experienced the worst drought in at least two decades, exacerbated by El Niño and the broader climate crisis.

Bypassing 17-Hour Blackouts

The severe dry spell reduced hydroelectricity production at the Kariba Dam to unprecedented lows. This caused crippling daily power cuts of up to 17 hours in Zimbabwe and 21 hours in neighbouring Zambia. Both countries currently rely heavily on hydropower. For clinics relying solely on the grid, this would have been catastrophic.

For patients and local communities, decentralised solar power and energy storage keep health services running. By acting independently of the national grid, these solar arrays provide an essential lifeline before, during, and after climate disasters, ensuring uninterrupted care when it is needed most.

Beyond Power: Smart Digital Health

Building on the success of Zimbabwe, neighbouring Zambia is actively replicating the model. By the end of 2025, 423 rural health facilities (serving over 5 million people) and three national medical warehouses will be equipped with solar energy and satellite internet in partnership with their Ministry of Health.

Solar power does not just keep the lights on; it bridges the digital divide. Green energy unlocks internet connectivity, health technology adoption, and innovative financing mechanisms.

Real-Time Data Streaming

At eight pilot sites, smart sensors leverage the Internet of Things (IoT) to monitor equipment use, energy consumption, and environmental conditions. Digital connectivity will provide real-time streaming data to national health authorities, allowing administrators to safeguard medicines and prevent problems before they arise.

Leveraging its partnership with the Global Fund, the UNDP's Smart Health Systems initiative uses scalable, modular solar solutions. From 2025, the UNDP is fast-tracking these solutions, targeting ten countries and mobilising at least $100 million for expansion to 20 new countries by 2030.

"We want everyone, no matter where they live, to have access to reliable, quality healthcare. Solar energy is the bridge to achieving that vision."

— Dr. James Wakiaga, Resident Representative at UNDP Zambia
