STOP Blaming the Technician! Why Your Solar Inverter is Really Tripping (Hint: It’s Not Always the Installer’s Fault)
By Sona Solar Zimbabwe • Updated March 25, 2026
The Elephant in the Room. As solar energy adoption hits record highs across Zimbabwe, we’ve witnessed every installation style imaginable—from high-end Deye hybrid systems to makeshift DIY projects. While "bakkie-brigade" installers are a real risk, there is a silent truth no one wants to admit: Even the best solar installation can fail if the environment and usage are working against it.
| "When a high-performance inverter blows, the technician is the first to get the call. But behind the scenes, user error and grid instability are the real culprits." |
Real Accountability: Beyond the Wiring
At Sona Solar Zimbabwe, we never excuse poor workmanship. We’ve seen enough "cowboy contractors" to know that bad wiring is a plague. However, today we are being brutally honest. From overloading circuits to ignoring lithium battery depth-of-discharge (DoD) limits, many system failures stem directly from operational neglect. If you aren't managing your load-shedding cycles correctly, it’s not always the installer’s fault—it's a stewardship crisis.
The "Load Hiding" Epidemic
Here is a classic scenario we see all too often in the industry. A client will approach us for a quote and say, "I only want to power three bulbs, two standing fans, and my laptop. Keep it cheap."
Based on that honest calculation, you recommend and install a solid 1kVA system with sufficient battery backup for reliable night-time power. However, the moment the installation team leaves, this same client will secretly add four more fans, two double-door fridges, two Air Conditioners, three big-screen televisions, and a welding machine.
On Top of a 1kVA?
They load all of this onto a tiny 1kVA system! When the inverter inevitably screams, overloads, and blows its circuits, all the blame falls squarely on the installer. They will go to social media and claim the company sold them "fake products." Meanwhile, the main culprit is the client who tried to cheat the physics of electricity because they thought they were being "wise."
The Doctor Analogy
Clients absolutely need to be honest about their actual loads. It is exactly like hiding your severe symptoms from a doctor, getting a prescription for a mild headache, and then blaming the doctor when you don't recover from an illness you never mentioned!
The "Sachet Inverter" Delusion
Another major hurdle is the expectation that ultra-cheap, unbranded equipment will perform like top-tier machinery. We often get calls from clients who bought equipment downtown on the black market and just want us to "wire it up."
And please—somebody should help us ask why on earth someone thinks a poorly manufactured, fake-rated 5000VA Chinese "Sachet" inverter can carry their heavy-duty four-plate hotplate, a geyser, and a welding machine simultaneously?
Not All Watts Are Created Equal
Just because a cheap inverter has a sticker that says "5000W" does not mean it can sustain a 5000W continuous surge load. Premium brands (like Deye, Sunsynk, or MUST) use heavy copper transformers and robust internal components. Cheap alternatives cut corners. Pushing them to their absolute limit is a guaranteed recipe for a fire hazard.
We Are Engineers, Not Magicians
At Sona Solar Zimbabwe, we always tell our clients the truth, even if it means losing a sale to a rogue installer who is willing to lie to them.
The Golden Rule of Solar
"Na Electricians we be, no be Magicians!" You cannot draw 5kW of power from a battery bank that can only safely discharge 2kW. You cannot run an Air Conditioner all night on two small panels. If you want heavy-duty performance, you must invest in heavy-duty architecture. Solar works perfectly—when sized honestly.
The Sona Solar Zimbabwe Standard
To avoid these disasters, Sona Solar Zimbabwe has implemented a strict standard operating procedure for all our clients to protect both their investment and our reputation:
