Established in 1986 and home to over 700 students, Karoi High School faced a devastating setback when a lightning strike destroyed its transformer, plunging the institution into years of darkness. A Milestone for Karoi's Education Sector
The energy crisis at the government-run school began years ago when a severe lightning storm destroyed the ZETDC transformer. The consequences for the 700 enrolled students were immediate and severe.

School Development Committee chairperson Abraham Dick highlighted how the outage crippled learning: computer practicals were suspended, essential science laboratory experiments were halted, and boarding students were completely unable to conduct night studies, negatively impacting the overall pass rate.

Despite being located less than 500 meters from a ZETDC workplace, as noted by Council Chairperson Abel Matsika, the school was handed a massive $3 million quotation to replace the transformer—an insurmountable cost for the local institution.
