AU Theme of the Year 2026: Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems
To transform this vision into reality, the African Union is actively mobilizing international stakeholders to address the continent's critical Water Sector Financing Gap. By deploying the Africa Water Investment Program, the framework establishes actionable pathways for Member States to upgrade aging municipal utilities and rural supply pipelines. This massive developmental push opens unprecedented opportunities for public-private partnerships, driving the immediate adoption of localized Solar-Powered Borehole Systems and smart technologies to build an unbreakable, drought-resistant foundation for Africa's future.
Launched during the 39th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly in Addis Ababa in February 2026, the theme responds to an urgent crisis: despite progress, millions of Africans still lack safe water. With climate change intensifying water stress through droughts and floods, the AU is placing the water-energy-food nexus at the absolute center of Africa’s development agenda.
"Every African deserves access to clean water and safe sanitation—this is not a privilege, but a right. Water is the engine of Africa’s industrialization, agriculture, and energy future."
Continental Priorities
The Strategic Framework for 2026
The 2026 Theme presents a significant opportunity to drive transformative, climate-resilient, and people-centered investments in water and sanitation across member states.
Key Focus Areas
Africa Water Vision 2063
Securing the adoption of the new Africa Water Vision 2063 and Policy to serve as the strategic framework for inclusive, climate-resilient water security post-2025. This involves strengthening political leadership at the highest levels of State and Government.
The Water-Energy-Food Nexus
Advancing integrated approaches that link water to agriculture, energy, and climate change. Promoting Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and fostering cooperation on transboundary water systems.
Mobilizing Investment & Elevating Africa's Voice
Supporting Member States in accessing resources to expand services. The AU aims to present a unified African position ahead of major multilateral events, including the UN Water Conference 2026, accelerating the implementation of SDG 6.
A Unified Mandate
The Continental Call to Action
The African Union has outlined a unified continental call to shift the narrative and raise the profile of water from a basic commodity to an economic engine.
The Six Pillars of Action
1. Water as a Human Right
“Every African deserves access to clean water and safe sanitation—this is not a privilege, but a right.”
2. Security for Transformation
“Water is the engine of Africa’s industrialization, agriculture, and energy future.” Sustainable systems require investment framed as a priority for national budgets.
3. Climate Resilience
“Securing water means securing Africa against climate shocks.” Droughts and floods actively threaten availability, requiring immediate adaptation strategies.
4. Pan-African Solidarity
“Water unites us across borders—our rivers, lakes, and aquifers are shared lifelines.”
5. Youth & Innovation
Linking water security to job creation and technological advancement, empowering young innovators to lead the way.
6. Equity & Inclusion
Ensuring rural and marginalized communities—who often face the greatest water insecurity—are strictly prioritized.
Executing the Vision
Key Initiatives and Resources
The AU has rolled out multiple frameworks and highlight programs to ensure Member States can actively execute this vision over the coming year.

The Solar Connection: Pumping Life into Africa
Water and Energy are Inseparable
The African Union's sharp focus on the Water-Energy-Food nexus perfectly aligns with the realities on the ground. You cannot achieve sustainable water availability without reliable energy to pump, purify, and distribute it. As the grid remains unstable across many regions, Solar Water Pumping Systems are the ultimate solution to realizing the AU's 2026 vision.
By integrating solar power into agricultural irrigation, rural boreholes, and urban water tanks, communities can bypass unreliable fossil fuels, combat climate change directly, and secure their water supply permanently.
